Create MPO from two images or JPS
StereoPhotoView saves an existing stereo pair as MPO. Input can be two separate JPEG images or a JPS containing a side-by-side pair. To preserve the intended depth, select the left view first and the right view second, and check the source layout.
Input and result
Input: photo-left.jpg and photo-right.jpg captured for different eyes, or photo sample.jps with two views side by side. Result: one MPO containing the stereo pair. Packaging two duplicate or unrelated photos into MPO does not make a valid stereo scene.
Interface steps
- Install the application.
- For two JPEG images, choose “File” → “Open separate files” and select the left image first, then the right image. For JPS, choose “Open”; select Side by Side under “Source Format” if it is not detected.
- Inspect the pair in a suitable display mode. Align the views if necessary. If the cameras used different white balance or exposure, automatically adjust one view’s colors to match the other before saving the MPO.
- Choose “File” → “Save as…”, a new filename ending in
.mpo, and file settings. Leave “Reverse order” unchecked if the input already uses left → right order. - Open the saved MPO and inspect view order and depth.
Command line
Create a new empty folder named created-mpo. These commands use syntax suitable for Windows PowerShell and Linux bash. Choose the command for your input; the two examples use different result names.
Two JPEG images, left first:
stereo-conv -o "created-mpo/from-pair.mpo" "photo-left.jpg" "photo-right.jpg"
A JPS with a normal side-by-side pair:
stereo-conv --input-layout Horizontal -o "created-mpo/from-jps.mpo" "photo sample.jps"
MPO output is determined by the result extension. The reference also documents --operations auto-align:hvr for automatic alignment of two images; inspect its results before processing a collection.
Limitations
Horizontal means a normal side-by-side pair, not anamorphic Half-SBS. For other layouts, see layout conversion and your utility’s options. Packaging a stereo pair does not generate a new view from a single 2D photo. Saving MPO does not promise unchanged transfer of all source metadata.
You can extract both JPEG images to inspect the contents. See opening separate files and saving images for details.
